Our Top 100 ranking is based on assets under management, revenue generated for the advisors' firms, and the quality of advisors' practices. Investment performance is not an explicit factor because the advisors serve clients with varied goals and risk tolerances. The formula that Barron's uses to rank advisors is proprietary, but Barron's discloses that it reflects the volume of assets overseen by the advisors and their teams, revenues generated for the firms and the quality of the advisors' practices. To be considered for inclusion, an adviser must submit a 102-question survey containing factual data about the firm and the individual participant submitting the response.
Barron's does not disclose how many firms were considered or applied for inclusion on the list. Barron's requests that responding firms provide total assets under advisement ("AUA"). AUA includes all assets under management, both discretionary and non-discretionary, as defined for purposes of Form ADV, as well as other client assets about which a responding firm provides advice which may include the value of corporate stock positions held by myCIO clients (e.g. restricted stock, employee stock options, outright stock) as well as the value of private business interests it advises on as part of its overall planning.

Portfolio performance is not criteria due to varying client objectives and lack of audited data. As of July 2016, SHOOK received 11,235 nominations, based on thresholds and invited 4,000 advisers to complete their online survey. SHOOK conducted 2,500 telephone interviews and 425 in-person interviews at Advisors' locations.

Financial Times ("FT") examines the database of RIAs registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") and selects those that reported to the SEC that they had $300MM or more in AUM. The RIAs have no subjective input. FT invites qualifying RIAs, more than 1,500, to complete a lengthy application that gives them more information. FT adds to this with their own research into the RIAs practices, including data from regulatory filings.
The formula that FT uses to grade advisers is based on six broad factors and calculates a numeric score for each adviser. Areas of consideration include adviser AUM, asset growth, the company's age, industry certifications of key employees, SEC compliance record and online accessibility. AUM and asset growth, combined, comprise roughly 80-85% of each adviser's score.
FT caps the number of companies from any one state. The cap is roughly based on the distribution of millionaires across the US.
